3 Hennessy cocktails for World Cognac Day

Add a desi twist to your World Cognac Day celebrations with these 3 Hennessy cocktails made with Indian ingredients.

June 4 marks the day when brandy lovers and distillers across the world celebrate World Cognac Day. The history of cognac dates back to the 16th century, when the Dutch began to distil the white wine from France. As the French followed suit, the largest cognac brands in existence today started to come up. Hennessy, which started up its distillery in 1765, today accounts for almost half of all cognac production in the world.

There are several factors such as distillation process, grape varietals used and location of production that qualify a brandy as a cognac.

But what is it that makes a brandy qualify as cognac? There are several factors to be considered. The white wine from which it is made must be distilled twice in copper stills and then matured in French oak barrels for a minimum of two years. After the second distillation is produced eau di vie, which is then blended with other eau di vies and in some cases put in barrels again to age some more. And then comes the final product, cognac. Grape varietals used are also of vital importance, with Ugni Blanc being the primary variety aside from Folle Blanche and Colombard. And of course, the region of production is a crucial factor, with only Cognac, located southwest of Paris and north of Bordeaux, and well-defined areas around it, allowed to use the name.

This World Cognac Day, celebrate safely at home with these three Hennessy cocktails. And to add a desi twist, all of these use Indian ingredients.
